David Cobb Interview with Photos and writing by Austin Mayer and Patrick Beaudouin

David never calls me to go out and film. I like that. He would rather snap his motorcycle chain in El Centro and spend six hours waiting for a tow. In the three days I managed to talk him out of leaving Chula Park we shot his whole interview.

How many hours a week do you skate Chula park?
[Laughing] Probably a solid twenty. Seriously. Is that bad?

That’s twenty hours a week of wearing a helmet. That sounds pretty bad to me. That’s a lot of forehead pimples.
I wear this baseball cap thing, its hardly a helmet.

What’s the deal with that park? Is it helmets all the time now?
Yeah pretty much but the rollerblader who owned it got fired so it’s more chill than it used to be.

Aaron got fired? That’s the best news ever. Why?
Hell yeah I was hyped when I heard. I guess he was having the other worker clock him in when he wasn’t there. Total fraud.

That’s karma for him being a dick.
Fuck yeah. He had it comin.

What’s the skate scene looking like down south. Who’s killing it down there?
Right now the homie Kameron Wilson has been killing it and Aldrin Garcia amazes me every time I see him skate, he rips. Also this little kid named Alexis, he’s like 10 and hardflipping man sized gaps. Oh yeah and this kid named Ivan who fuckin regular frontside big spinned Rincon. That was fucked.

All these kids are spawns of Chula Park or are they actually getting out in the streets unlike you?
Pretty much. Fuck you! We’ve been filming a lot lately actually.

You guys have a Filmer or is it just homie cam?
My friend Keifer has been filming. He’s got a vx1 setup and a Honda Odyssey soccer mom van, so we all pile in there and go skate..

If you need some grip tape what shop are you hitting up down there? Kafe?
I’ve actually never been to Kafe. I just go to the mall, awesome!

You still riding for Sun Diego? How long do you think that’s gonna last?
Supposedly. They basically give me enough budget to get a board a month. I’m pretty much over it.

So if a legit shop was down, you’d jump ship? Just throwing it out there.
I wouldn’t even think twice

You got your motorcycle before your car. What made you pick two wheels over four?
Cheaper on gas. Plus my dad said he'd buy me my first bike or my first car. So I chose the bike and got my sisters old car. Booooyahh!

Why the hell is your sister a red head? Aren’t you Mexican?
I don’t know. My dad had a red afro in high school. I’m white and Puerto Rican or something.

Tell me about your motorcycles’ What are you riding now?
My first was a Honda rebel 250. It was very cool. [Laughing] But now I’ve moved up to a 78 Yamaha sr500 that I’m slowly trying to make into somewhat of a cafe bike.

Any close calls on the bike so far?
Some dude backed out in front of me the other day. I locked up my back tire like a dumbass and skidded a couple feet.

I think where gonna throw your Orphanage add in this thing. How come you don’t jump down big gaps anymore like in that add?
Well fuck right now I’m just filming for fun basically. If somebody asked me to film some shit I’m down to break myself. It’s all fun.

Are you still riding those shitty Wal-Mart shoes? They’re gonna have airspeed there soon, maybe you can pick up a pro model for 15 bucks.
[Laughing] They’re cheap. That’s another reason why I haven’t been jumpin down shit. My feet would break in half. I got some half cabs from my friend Ruben the other day, so it’s on.

Last time I was in your car you where listening to some 70’s stoner rock?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Hendrix, and some Big L, Wu Tang, The Doors, Nas, Black Sabbath, I don’t know, a shit load of different stuff.

Let everybody know the three best tacos shops in the south bay?
Mexicanos, Robertos, and Don Pedros. All in Chula son!

Anybody you might want to thank that probably wont read this anyways?
Ruben for all the shoes. Kam, Trevor, Taylor, fat Daniel, all the homies from Chula!
